Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 45 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Cooking spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and pork and cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon or spatula, until browned and cooked through.
  2. Add the onion, green bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the skillet and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the thyme, oregano, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Add the chicken broth and rice to the skillet and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet with a lid.
  5. Cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed all of the liquid.
  6. Season the dirty rice with salt and pepper, to taste.
  7. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve.

Notes

  • This recipe can easily be made ahead of time and reheated when ready to serve.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, you can increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add hot sauce to taste.
  • This recipe can be made with chicken or turkey instead of beef and pork if preferred.
