Ingredients

  • 1 cup of basmati rice
  • 1 cup of chickpeas (soaked overnight)

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups of water

Equipment

  • Pressure cooker or a deep pan
  • Knife and chopping board
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker or a deep pan, heat oil and add chopped onions. Saute until they turn golden brown.
  3. Add ginger garlic paste and chopped green chillies. Saute for a minute.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and saute until they turn mushy.
  5. Add soaked chickpeas and all the spices. Mix well and saute for a minute.
  6. Drain the water from the soaked rice and add it to the pan. Mix well.
  7. Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Mix well.
  8. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 3-4 whistles in the pressure cooker or on medium heat for 20-25 minutes in a deep pan.
  9. Once the pressure has released, open the cooker or pan and fluff the rice with a fork.
  10. Serve hot with raita or any side dish of your choice.

Notes

  • Make sure to soak the chickpeas overnight to cook them faster.
  • You can also use canned chickpeas if you don't have time to soak them.
  • If you don't have all the spices mentioned in the recipe, you can use a store-bought biryani masala instead.
