Description

Cabbage rice, also known as muttaikose sadam, is a popular South Indian dish that is easy to make and packed with flavor. This dish is made by cooking rice with cabbage and a variety of spices, resulting in a tasty and nutritious one-pot meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of basmati rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 small cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp of cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp of mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp of urad dal
  • 1 tsp of chana dal
  • 1 tsp of ginger garlic paste
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp of red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp of oil
  • A handful of coriander leaves, chopped

Equipment

  • A large pot with a lid
  • A skillet or frying pan
  • A wooden spoon or spatula

Method

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, urad dal, and chana dal. Fry until the mustard seeds start to pop.
  3. Add chopped onions, green chilies, and ginger garlic paste. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add the finely chopped cabbage and stir well. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the cabbage is tender.
  5. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Stir well with the cabbage mixture.
  6. Add 2 cups of water, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to taste. Stir well and bring it to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it cook for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.
  8. Turn off the heat and let the rice sit for 5 minutes. Fluff it up with a fork.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or pickle.

Notes

  • You can add vegetables like carrots, peas, or beans to make it more nutritious.
  • If you don't have basmati rice, you can use any other long-grain rice.
  • Adjust the spice level according to your preference.
